Overview

Iron and Manganese filter is commonly used in groundwater treatment, and its main function is to complete ion exchange through oxidation method, oxidizing the low-valent iron and manganese ions in the water into high-valent iron and manganese ions, and then removing these ions through the process of adsorption, filtration and precipitation. This equipment is especially suitable for treating seriously polluted groundwater, which can not only effectively remove iron and manganese, but also realize the removal of ammonia and nitrogen by using ammonia in the water as a nutrient source with the help of iron and other bacteria.

Working principle

The working principle of the Iron and Manganese filter mainly follows the following steps:

  1. oxidation reaction: under the action of aeration device, the low valence iron ions (Fe²⁺) and manganese ions (Mn²⁺) in the water react with the oxygen in the air to generate high valence iron ions (Fe³⁺) and manganese ions (Mn⁴) ⁺).
  2. Ion exchange: High-valent iron and manganese ions are chemically adsorbed on the surface of the filter media, which is usually refined quartz or manganese sand.
  3. adsorption and filtration: the adsorbed ferromanganese ions pass through the filter layer of the filter media, the ferromanganese oxide particles are retained, and the ferromanganese content in the water is reduced.
  4. Sedimentation removal: the filtered water flows through the sedimentation tank, the solid impurities fall into the bottom and form sludge, while the clear water flows out from the upper part.

Equipment composition and installation requirements

In addition to Iron and Manganese filter generally consists of the following main parts:

  • Filter tank: the main place for physical filtration and chemical adsorption.
  • Aeration device: used to inject oxygen into the water to promote the oxidation of iron and manganese.
  •  Intermediate pressurizing pump: to maintain the water flow pressure inside the system.
  •  Backwash pump: backwash the saturated filter media to remove sediments.
  • Control system: automatically control the whole workflow, including aeration time, filtration time, backwashing time and so on.
  • Water supply pump and pipe network system: ensure that the treated water can be smoothly transported to the target location.

The following points need to be noted when installing:

  1. firm foundation: the equipment must be placed on a horizontal concrete foundation to ensure a firm foundation to avoid subsidence.
  2. Reasonable layout: the installation position of each component should be reasonably laid out to ensure the convenience of operation and maintenance.
  3. Anti-vibration measures: Add anti-vibration pads to each connection part of the equipment to reduce vibration and noise during operation.

Selection and regeneration of filter media

The filter media for removing iron and manganese is usually refined quartz sand or manganese sand, which are derived from natural minerals and have excellent catalytic properties. The filter media is very sensitive to ferromanganese ions, which are firmly adsorbed as long as they are present. However, over time, the filter media will become saturated and regeneration is required.

The regeneration process is generally chemical, i.e., the saturated media is soaked in a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution for about 6-8 hours to restore the media to its initial state and regain its adsorption capacity. The regenerated filter media can continue to be used, extending the operating life of the equipment.

Operation and maintenance of the equipment

In order to ensure the efficient operation of the Iron and Manganese filter, daily operation and maintenance are essential:

  1. regular inspection: check the working condition of each component regularly, especially the aeration device and filter tank.
  2. Filter media replacement and regeneration: Replace or regenerate the filter media regularly to maintain good filtration effect. Generally it takes 1-2 times per year for the cost of filter media loss.
  3. System Cleaning: Perform system cleaning, especially backwashing, on a regular basis to prevent the accumulation of ferromanganese oxides in the filter tank from clogging the filter media layer.
  4. control system maintenance: ensure the normal operation of the control system, and for highly automated systems, calibrate the controllers and sensors regularly.

Technical advantages

At present, the technology of Iron and Manganese filter has been quite mature, with the following advantages:

  1. High-efficiency iron and manganese removal: the equipment can effectively remove the high concentration of iron and manganese ions in groundwater.
  2. Removing ammonia and nitrogen: under specific conditions, using ammonia as a nutrient source to realize the effect of removing ammonia and nitrogen.
  3. Stable and reliable: the system is reasonably designed, stable in operation, easy in maintenance, and the equipment life is up to several decades.
  4. Low operation cost: the equipment has low operation cost, only need to bear the cost of filter material loss and a small amount of electricity every year, saving the operation cost.
  5. Wide range of application: it is suitable for removing iron and manganese from all kinds of underground water sources, and is widely used in the fields of drinking water, waterworks, industrial and mining enterprises, and rural water supply.
